Bayern finally beaten, Gladbach go fourth !
FC Bayern München suffered a first league defeat of the season at FC Augsburg, while VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach exploited another loss for Bayer 04 Leverkusen to leapfrog them into fourth.
Bayern appear to have eased off the accelerator since claiming the German title, having had their 19-game winning streak ended last weekend in a 3-3 draw with TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. Sascha Mölders scored the only goal of the game at Augsburg, springing the offside trap to hit only his second this term and end Bayern's remarkable unbeaten Bundesliga run, which had lasted 53 matches (46 of them wins).
A 2-1 win against VfL Wolfsburg allowed second-ranked Borussia Dortmund to extend their lead over FC Schalke 04, who drew 1-1 stalemate at SV Werder Bremen, while Leverkusen endured a 2-1 reverse at Hamburger SV on Friday night – a sixth defeat in their last nine matches. After Julian Brandt had cancelled out Hakan Çalhanoğlu's opener, Heiko Westermann produced a winning goal that resulted in the dismissal of coach Sami Hyypia, and could have serious ramifications for Leverkusen's UEFA Champions League hopes.
Mönchengladbach have replaced Leverkusen in fourth place on goal difference following a 2-0 success at lowly 1. FC Nürnberg. Juan Arango scored with a deflected free-kick on his 150th Bundesliga outing, and Max Kruse converted a penalty to put Gladbach in charge of their own European destiny.
The win for relegation-battling Hamburg, now 16th, maintains the tension at the foot of the table, after 15th-placed VfB Stuttgart saw off 14th-placed SC Freiburg 2-0. Three points is all that separates the five teams above bottom side TSV Eintracht Braunschweig.
